“Fuck! How did I end up in a coffin?”
“What the hell? Boss, didn’t you say that exploring tombs is safe? Aren’t ghosts just a bunch of made-up stories?”
Bang! Slam! Thud!
“Hello? Is anyone here? Is there a kind-hearted soul who can help me out? It’s freezing here!”
Lin Xinghai trembled from the intense cold, his teeth chattering uncontrollably. It felt like the coffin was crafted from ice, exuding a bone-chilling air that penetrated his very core.
The boss said any antique from this ancient tomb could easily fetch hundreds of thousands, but the money was not worth it.
Would I risk my life for a measly sum of money?
If I’m given a second chance, I will definitely…
…have someone with experience like Larra Croft with me!
[TN: Tomb raider reference.]
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Despair filled Lin Xinghai as he pounded on the walls of the coffin. Despite knowing the futility of his actions, he couldn’t bear the thought of passively waiting for death. He needed to do something, anything, to fight against his impending fate.
Creak!
The coffin lid was opened!
“Fucker, stop knocking. The freezing system hasn’t been completely deactivated yet. What’s the hurry?” Lin Xinghai was a little confused.
Before him stood a soldier, heavily armed.
However, that wasn’t entirely accurate either. A soldier should be firm, resolute, and dependable.
The person before Lin Xinhai had an aggressive demeanor, exuding a rogue-like vibe.
Lin Xinhai’s attention quickly shifted to his surroundings. He realized that he was not in a cold coffin, but…
What is this? It looks so high-tech!
Is that a drone hovering in the sky? But why is there a person standing on the drone?
Suddenly, the sound of heavy footsteps came from beside him.
Lin Xinhai turned his head with some difficulty. He saw a metallic creation passing by his “coffin”. Is that a miniature version of Gundam?
Ouch!
Overwhelmed by the flood of information, Lin Xinghai was still in a daze when a piercing pain shot through his right arm.
The high-tech metal “coffin” inserted a syringe into his arm, injecting a red liquid.
With the injection, the icy sensation swiftly faded away from his body.
“Lin Xinghai, a native of Earth Federation, Nephriya District, Coastland City. The subject entered Shelter 83 in 2200 AD. At 2210 AD, due to the depletion of resources in the shelter, everyone collectively entered the hibernation pods.”
“The subject is 21 years old. Genetic assessment: Grade B! The subject shows promising growth potential.” The “soldier” projected a screen from the device on his wrist, softly reciting Lin Xinghai’s information.
“Hey! Grade B genetic assessment. Boy, are you interested in joining our mercenary group to be cannon fodder? *Cough* I mean a brave hero. My name is Roger. Once you’re with me, I will cover your back.” Roger said enthusiastically.
“Hey! I heard you.” Lin Xinghai complained subconsciously, but his attention was all on Roger’s words.
Is this my profile? None of it is correct except the name.
Wait…
Have I transmigrated into another world?
It’s already 200 years later.
Lin Xinghai’s mind was in disarray, unable to piece together the details of his awakening. He faintly recalled being surrounded by a multitude of coffins, or rather, a sea of hibernation pods.
Then, Lin Xinhai followed the mercenary named Roger and boarded an Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) with thick metal shielding.
As more and more people boarded, the troop carrier was quickly filled up with passengers.
The heavy metal doors closed. The interior of the vehicle lit up, with the light focusing on Roger.
After escorting Lin Xinghai onto the troop carrier, Roger didn’t leave. He was now the only mercenary inside the vehicle.
“Alright, pigs. Let’s start with an introduction. I’m Roger. We are about to depart from Shelter 83. Before we do, I’ll fill you in on the situation outside.” Roger shouted.
“Who the fuck are you, calling us pigs?” Someone in the crowd was offended. Standing at 6 feet 7 inches, a burly man stood up, glaring at Roger angrily.
Roger took two steps forward and drew the handgun from his waist, tapping it against the burly man’s face with disdain. He sneered, “You and everyone else on this vehicle are nothing but a bunch of pigs! Any objections?”
The burly man felt a mix of embarrassment and anger, but the cold sensation from the barrel made him hesitate to speak.
Roger glanced around at everyone in the vehicle before speaking slowly, “This isn’t just my personal insult to you, but the collective sentiment of all the survivors in the post-apocalypse toward those who have been in hibernation.”
Hearing the word post-apocalypse, many people’s faces changed drastically.
“Hasn’t the catastrophe ended? Didn’t the Earth Federation dispatch you all for the rescue?” Someone spoke up in an anxious tone, clearly displaying their restlessness.
“The Earth Federation has collapsed.” Roger’s words caused a wave of uproars inside the vehicle while Lin Xinghai remained bewildered.
What is the Earth Federation?
“The catastrophe is over. The Earth’s surface temperature returned to normal a year ago, and the flood subsided. However, the Earth’s ecosystem has completely collapsed. More importantly, numerous man-eating monsters have appeared. We call them zombies.”
Following Roger’s story, Lin Xinghai gradually understood the flow of events.
In 2200 AD, the Earth’s population continued to increase, but the resources rapidly declined, leading to escalating tensions and ongoing friction between nations.
It almost led to the outbreak of World War 3.
Luckily, the leaders of various countries showed considerable restraint. After the negotiations, the “Earth Federation” was established.
To resolve the conflicts between nations and with the advancement of warp drive technology, they shifted their focus to the other habitable planets.
The great migration, which was bound to be recorded in human history, did not occur because the apocalypse erupted.
No one knew what had happened. The sudden meteorite rain reduced the Earth’s population by 10%.
However, that was only the beginning of the apocalypse. The melting of ice and snow on the north and south poles caused massive sea-level rises, submerging most low-altitude cities.
Then, there were never-ending tornadoes sweeping the world. There was also a period of ice age that lasted for more than a decade.
That was the apocalypse.
The natural disasters were almost insurmountable, leaving humanity with no choice but to seek refuge in underground shelters.
This was all the people in Shelter 83 knew.
Three days after the closure of Shelter 83, a previously undocumented species suddenly emerged, spreading across the globe.
The monster seemed to be made of blood, and it was impossible to kill them. Even if they were blown to pieces, they could be reassembled quickly.
What was even more terrifying was that they carried a horrific virus with them. All living beings infected by the virus turned into mindless walking corpses.
They were the zombies!
